Florida Veteran Found Slain in His Own Home as Suspect Confesses, Authorities Say
A quiet Florida community is reeling after a 76-year-old American veteran was found stabbed to death inside his own home — and the woman accused of killing him allegedly admitted to the crime before fleeing in his truck.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, 48-year-old Shannon R. Giblin has been charged with second-degree murder and grand theft of a motor vehicle following the brutal death of Paul De Wayne Bradley, a 76-year-old veteran who had opened his home to her.
Investigators say the violence unfolded on Sunday, March 8, inside Bradley’s Punta Gorda residence after an argument between the two. Authorities allege Giblin stabbed Bradley during the dispute, killing the elderly veteran in the very home he had served his nation to protect.
Deputies were dispatched after receiving a call reporting a person not breathing. When first responders arrived, they found Bradley deceased and beyond saving. What they uncovered next would send shockwaves through the tight-knit neighborhood.
Suspect Allegedly Fled in Victim’s Truck
Law enforcement officials say Giblin covered Bradley’s body with a tarp before taking off in his truck. She was later located in neighboring Sarasota County, still in possession of the vehicle. After being taken into custody, authorities report that she confessed to the killing.
“I want to recognize my Major Crimes detectives who worked this case through the night and identified the suspect quickly,” said Sheriff Bill Prummell. “They truly show a dedication to their craft and the results are irrefutable.”
Giblin is currently being held in the Sarasota County Jail as she awaits extradition. Officials confirmed she is being held on bond.
A Community Mourns a Veteran
For neighbors, the tragedy is especially painful because Bradley was more than just another resident — he was a veteran who had survived war and serious health struggles, only to meet a violent end at home.
Residents say Giblin had recently moved in to assist Bradley around the house. Instead, authorities allege the arrangement ended in deadly betrayal.
Neighbor Jody Scharping described Bradley as a kindhearted man who cared deeply about those around him.
“He was a veteran. He went through wars and came back. He survived a heart attack not long ago, and then this is what takes his life. Nobody deserves that,” Scharping said.
Scharping also shared that Bradley had mentored her son, calling him a gentle, fatherly presence in the neighborhood — someone who had served his country and continued serving his community long after returning home.
Stories like Bradley’s are a reminder of the sacrifices made by America’s veterans — men and women who risk everything for our freedoms. That one of these patriots would die in such a violent manner has left many in the area heartbroken and outraged.
Family Responds
In a public statement, members of Giblin’s family expressed sorrow for Bradley’s loved ones and said they would not attempt to excuse or shift responsibility for the alleged crime.
They acknowledged the seriousness of the accusations and stated that the suspect will have to face both legal consequences and, in their words, answer before God for what happened.
As the case moves forward, the people of Punta Gorda are left grieving the loss of a veteran who survived war, endured hardship, and remained a steady presence in his community — only to have his life cut short in an act authorities describe as senseless and tragic.
Law enforcement officials say the investigation remains ongoing.
