Teen Military Recruit Heroically Disarms Ax-Wielding Thug Protecting Brother

Teen Military Recruit Takes Down Ax-Wielding Suspect to Protect His Brother

A Florida community witnessed real-life courage in action Sunday night when an 18-year-old military recruit used his mixed martial arts training to stop an ax-wielding man who allegedly threatened him and his younger brother at an Ocala car wash.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, 36-year-old Bryce Thayer approached the business as the two brothers were closing for the evening. What began as a routine end to a workday quickly escalated into a dangerous confrontation that could have ended in tragedy.

Authorities say Thayer became angry after being told to leave the property. Instead of complying, he allegedly advanced toward the teens in what deputies described as a threatening manner — brandishing an ax.

The older brother, 18-year-old Leodan Pino, had been locking up when he heard shouting. When he confronted the suspect and told him to leave, the situation intensified. Thayer allegedly pulled an ax from his backpack and aimed it at Pino.

What happened next is a powerful reminder that strong young Americans still stand ready to defend themselves and their families.

Surveillance video shows Pino making a decisive move, lunging at the suspect as his 16-year-old brother managed to rip the ax away. With the weapon out of the attacker’s hands, Pino relied on his MMA training to bring the man to the ground and restrain him.

“Once he lowered himself, I went for the takedown,” Pino explained. “I controlled him, threw a couple of elbows when he refused to stop resisting, then secured him and held him until law enforcement arrived.”

Pino used advanced grappling techniques — including a body triangle and rear choke hold — to subdue the suspect without escalating the threat further. Deputies arriving at the scene found Thayer bruised from the struggle and took him into custody.

During a search incident to arrest, officers reportedly discovered a glass pipe commonly used for methamphetamine. Thayer now faces:

  • Two felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

He is currently being held on an $11,000 bond. Jail records show this was not his first encounter with law enforcement. Since May 2024, he has been arrested multiple times by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office on various charges.

While some would see this as just another crime story, many Americans see something deeper — a striking contrast between the chaos of repeat offenders and the discipline of young men stepping up to serve their country.

Pino recently enlisted in the United States military, answering the call to defend the nation. On this night, he defended his own family with the same resolve.

“I’m thankful God gave me the strength to control the situation,” Pino said. “I’m grateful I was there with my brother. I don’t know if anyone else would have been able to do what I did. I’m just thankful I could protect him.”

His response was measured but firm. No innocent lives were lost. The threat was neutralized. Law enforcement was able to safely take the suspect into custody.

At a time when many communities grapple with rising crime and repeat offenders cycling through the system, this incident highlights the importance of self-reliance, preparedness, and the kind of disciplined training that builds strong citizens. It also underscores the bravery found in everyday Americans — especially those preparing to wear the uniform of the United States.

This Florida teen didn’t hesitate. He put himself between danger and his younger brother, relying on skill, faith, and courage. That’s the kind of grit that built this country — and the kind of spirit that will keep it strong.

In Ocala, at least for one night, evil was met with backbone. And America’s next generation of servicemen proved they are more than ready.
