Brazen D.C. Ambush Leaves Federal Officer Wounded, Two Suspects Arrested

Brazen D.C. Ambush Leaves Federal Officer Wounded, Two Suspects Arrested

Two Suspects in Custody After Brazen Ambush Leaves U.S. Park Police Officer Wounded in D.C.

Two individuals are now behind bars after a shocking ambush that left a U.S. Park Police officer wounded in southeast Washington, D.C., underscoring once again the dangers law enforcement officers face every single day in the nation’s capital.

The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that 21-year-old Darren Foster was taken into custody shortly after the Monday evening shooting. A second suspect, 22-year-old Asheile Foster, was arrested the following day. Both suspects, residents of southeast D.C., have been charged with assaulting a federal police officer with a firearm — a serious federal offense.

The attack unfolded around 7:30 p.m. as the Park Police officer was conducting official business related to an ongoing investigation. According to reports, the officer was inside an unmarked Tesla vehicle when two armed men allegedly approached and opened fire.

Authorities say the suspects fired multiple rounds into the vehicle, striking the officer in the upper body. In what can only be described as remarkable courage and composure under pressure, the wounded officer managed to drive away from the kill zone, creating distance from the attackers and likely saving his own life in the process.

The injured officer was transported by the U.S. Park Police aviation unit to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials later confirmed that, thankfully, his injuries were not life-threatening. He has since been released from the hospital and is recovering.

Apparent Targeting of Federal Officer

Investigators believe this was no random act. Authorities have indicated there is information suggesting the suspects knew the person inside the vehicle was a law enforcement officer at the time of the attack. While an official motive has not yet been released, the possibility that a federal officer was deliberately targeted raises serious concerns about the escalating boldness of criminals operating in the District.

In response to the shooting, law enforcement moved swiftly. On Tuesday afternoon, authorities executed a raid on a residence near the scene of the ambush. Officers entered the home with weapons drawn as part of the high-risk operation. A K-9 unit was also deployed to assist in the search.

The investigation remains active and is being led by the Metropolitan Police Department’s NIBIN Investigations Unit. That specialized unit includes agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, working alongside U.S. Park Police detectives to track firearms evidence and build a strong federal case.

A Stark Reminder of the Risks Facing Law Enforcement

This incident serves as yet another sobering reminder of the hostile environment many law enforcement professionals confront, particularly in cities that have struggled with violent crime. Federal officers tasked with protecting public lands and national landmarks — and ensuring the safety of residents and visitors alike — should never have to face coordinated gunfire simply for doing their jobs.

Key facts from the incident include:

  • The shooting occurred Monday evening in southeast Washington, D.C.
  • The officer was inside an unmarked vehicle while conducting official duties.
  • Two suspects allegedly approached and fired multiple shots.
  • The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and has been released from the hospital.
  • Both suspects are charged with assault on a federal police officer with a gun.

As the legal process moves forward, many Americans will be watching closely. An attack on a federal officer is an attack on the rule of law itself. Our men and women in uniform deserve unwavering support — and criminals who target them must face the full weight of justice.

When those who enforce the law become targets, it is a direct challenge to the safety and order every American depends on.

For now, we are grateful that this brave officer survived what appears to have been a calculated ambush. The focus now turns to ensuring accountability and reinforcing the message that assaults on our nation’s law enforcement officers will not be tolerated — not in Washington, D.C., and not anywhere in the United States.
