Drunken Canadian Tourist Snatches Flamingo, Faces Felony Justice in Vegas

Drunken Canadian Tourist Snatches Flamingo, Faces Felony Justice in Vegas

Canadian Tourist’s Late-Night Rampage at Las Vegas Resort Ends in Felony Arrest

What was supposed to be another lively night on the Las Vegas Strip turned into a shocking display of recklessness when a Canadian tourist allegedly decided to turn a protected flamingo habitat into his personal playground.

Mitchell Fairbarn, 33, was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with four felony counts of animal abuse after authorities say he barged into a Las Vegas resort’s outdoor wildlife habitat around 5 a.m. and forcibly removed a Chilean flamingo named Peachy.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, surveillance images show Fairbarn entering the enclosed habitat and grabbing the bird by its legs. The chaotic encounter didn’t just harm one animal. Police report that multiple birds in the enclosure were injured during the disturbing episode.

From Casino Floor to 14th-Floor Room

Investigators allege that Fairbarn carried Peachy through the resort and up to his 14th-floor hotel room. Officers later discovered feathers and blood inside the room, painting a grim picture of what happened after the bird was removed from its protected environment.

Authorities also reviewed cellphone video that reportedly shows Fairbarn posing with the flamingo in the casino hallways and inside his hotel room — a stunning level of brazenness inside one of America’s most iconic tourist destinations.

Police described the handling of the bird as intentional and harmful, rejecting any suggestion that the incident was an innocent mistake.

When questioned by officers, Fairbarn admitted he had been drinking heavily. He allegedly claimed he believed the flamingo’s wing was injured and that he was trying to “pop it back into place.” Law enforcement officials were not persuaded. The evidence, they say, tells a very different story.

Wildlife Harmed, Veterinarians Step In

Peachy suffered a wing injury and is currently receiving professional veterinary care. Resort officials confirmed that their trained animal care team is doing everything possible to nurse the bird back to health. Other flamingos in the habitat were also reported injured during the incident.

The wildlife habitat, located at a Caesars Entertainment property, is home to Chilean flamingos and other animals in a tranquil garden setting just steps away from the bright lights of the casino floor. For years, it has been a popular attraction for families and tourists seeking a moment of calm amid the excitement of Las Vegas.

In a public statement, Caesars Entertainment condemned the conduct and emphasized that it is fully cooperating with law enforcement. The company expressed gratitude to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for what it described as a swift response, while voicing hope that Peachy and the other affected birds will make a full recovery.

Law and Order Prevail

Las Vegas welcomes millions of visitors every year, including many from abroad, who come to enjoy the freedoms and hospitality that make America exceptional. But that welcome comes with one simple expectation: respect the law and treat people — and animals — with decency.

This incident is a reminder that actions have consequences. Animal cruelty is not a prank, and being intoxicated is no excuse for reckless or harmful behavior. American communities work hard to maintain safe, family-friendly attractions, and law enforcement stands ready to protect them.

Fairbarn remains in custody as he awaits court proceedings. His initial appearance is scheduled for Monday, March 9. If convicted on the felony charges, he could face serious legal consequences.

As Peachy fights to recover, many are hoping justice is served swiftly and clearly. In a nation built on the rule of law, no one — tourist or citizen — is above accountability.
