Restoring Civic Education
The following is an opinion piece and does not necessarily reflect the editorial position of Wake Up America News.
There was a time when every American student could name the three branches of government, explain the Bill of Rights, and articulate why the principles of the Constitution matter. That time, sadly, has passed for far too many of our young people.
Recent surveys show that only 36% of Americans can name all three branches of government, and a disturbing number of young adults cannot identify basic constitutional protections. This is not merely an academic shortcoming — it is a threat to the continued functioning of our republic.
What Must Change
Civic education must be restored to its rightful place in American schools. This means:
- Requiring a full year of American government and civics for high school graduation
- Teaching the Constitution as a living document that protects individual liberty
- Including primary source documents — the Declaration of Independence, the Federalist Papers, the Constitution itself
- Encouraging respectful debate and critical thinking about policy issues
A self-governing people must understand how their government works. Without that understanding, the very foundation of our republic is at risk.
