Patriotic New Jersey Town Pushes to Name School After Trump

New Jersey Community Considers Honoring President Trump with Elementary School Name

A proud suburban community in Monmouth County, New Jersey, is considering a bold and patriotic proposal: renaming a local elementary school in honor of President Donald J. Trump. The idea has ignited passionate discussion among school board members and residents, reflecting just how deeply engaged Americans remain about the future of their communities — and their country.

The proposal was introduced by Robert Scales, a member of the Colts Neck Township Board of Education. Scales has called for the creation of an exploratory committee to examine what renaming Conover Road Primary School would involve. That review would look at logistical details, potential costs, and any policy considerations tied to naming a school after a former president.

Currently, Conover Road Primary School serves children in pre-kindergarten through second grade. A nearby building, Conover Road Elementary School, educates students in grades three through five. Under the proposal, the primary school would be renamed in recognition of President Trump’s legacy and leadership.

Scales argued that the move would be a meaningful gesture at a time when the nation is preparing to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence this July — a milestone that underscores America’s enduring commitment to liberty and self-government.

“What person is doing things that protects our school?” Scales asked during the board’s March 4 meeting, making the case that President Trump’s record merits recognition.

While the nine-member board did not immediately vote on forming the committee, several members expressed enthusiasm for exploring the idea further. Board member Vincent Rugnetta voiced support and even suggested that another local school could be named after Revolutionary War hero Joshua Huddy, tying the district’s schools more closely to both national and local history.

The conversation comes as no surprise to those familiar with Colts Neck’s political landscape. In the 2024 presidential election, voters in the township delivered overwhelming support for President Trump, backing him with 69% of the vote compared to 29% for former Vice President Kamala Harris. The numbers reflect a strong America First spirit in this New Jersey community.

Board President Angelique Volpe also revealed that she and her husband, fellow board member Kevin Walsh, have reached out to President Trump about the possibility of visiting the district. Volpe emphasized transparency in sharing that outreach, saying they would welcome the opportunity to host the president in Colts Neck.

Not everyone, however, is on board with the proposal. A local Democrat who previously ran for Congress criticized the idea on social media, claiming that school names should reflect certain virtues he believes President Trump does not embody. A former board member and at least one parent also raised concerns, arguing that naming a school after a prominent public figure could spark division or create security challenges.

Superintendent MaryJane Garibay has not publicly taken a position on the proposal. She did note that Conover Road Primary School was originally named after a local landowner whose estate benefited the district — a nod to the community’s longstanding tradition of recognizing those who have made an impact.

District policy adopted in 2009 outlines the formal process required to rename a school. The guidelines state that facility names should be free from bias or overt political or religious connotations and should reflect the heritage and character of the community. Whether President Trump’s name aligns with that policy will likely be central to the committee’s review if it moves forward.

At its heart, this debate is about more than a name on a building. It’s about how communities choose to honor leadership, protect local values, and commemorate the figures they believe have shaped America’s future. With the nation approaching its 250th birthday, Colts Neck finds itself at the crossroads of history — weighing whether to make a powerful statement about leadership, patriotism, and the direction of the country.

As discussions continue, one thing is clear: this New Jersey town is unafraid to engage in the spirited civic debate that defines a healthy republic.
