LAPD Arrests Rising Pop Singer D4vd in Shocking Murder Case of Missing California Teen

The Los Angeles Police Department has announced the arrest of 21-year-old musician David Burke, known professionally as D4vd, in connection with the brutal killing of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. Authorities confirmed that Burke was taken into custody Thursday and is being held without bail as detectives prepare to present the case to prosecutors.

The arrest marks a significant development in a tragic case that has shaken Southern California communities from Los Angeles to Lake Elsinore. For months, law enforcement officials had remained tight-lipped about suspects, even as grand jury proceedings quietly unfolded behind closed doors.

A Tragic Discovery in the Hollywood Hills

The case first stunned the public in September 2025 when Hernandez’s decomposed body was discovered inside the trunk compartment of an abandoned Tesla in the Hollywood Hills area of Los Angeles.

According to subpoenas and court documents later made public, investigators searching a 2023 Tesla Model Y at a tow yard located a cadaver bag that emitted a strong odor of decomposition. Upon partially unzipping the bag, detectives observed a decomposed head and torso.

Authorities from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner responded to the scene. Court records describe further disturbing findings: the victim’s arms and legs had been severed and placed into a second bag beneath the first.

The details of the discovery have intensified public scrutiny and heightened demands for justice.

Victim Identified as Missing Riverside County Teen

Celeste Rivas Hernandez had been reported missing in 2024 from her hometown of Lake Elsinore, California, roughly 70 miles southeast of Los Angeles. She was a seventh-grade student when she disappeared at age 13.

Authorities confirmed she was 14 at the time of her death. Her remains were discovered on September 8, one day after what would have been her 15th birthday.

The heartbreak for her family and community has been immense. Lake Elsinore residents held vigils, posted missing-person flyers, and shared appeals across social media during the long months she was unaccounted for.

Now, after more than a year of uncertainty, investigators believe they have identified the person responsible.

The Arrest of David Burke

LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division announced that David Burke, a Los Angeles resident, has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Police stated that the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.

Burke is currently being held without bail. In California, denial of bail in homicide cases generally reflects the seriousness of the charges and a judicial determination that the defendant may pose a danger to the community or a flight risk.

While Burke had not previously been publicly named as a suspect, court documents reveal he was the target of a Los Angeles County grand jury investigation as early as January. Subpoenas sought testimony from three of his relatives.

The documents state that the “target may be involved” in committing “one count of Murder” under California law. Murder in California is defined under California Penal Code Section 187 as the unlawful killing of a human being with malice aforethought.

The Tesla Connection

One of the most striking aspects of the case is the vehicle in which Hernandez’s remains were discovered. The abandoned Tesla was reportedly registered to David Burke.

The electric vehicle manufacturer, Tesla, Inc., headquartered in Austin, Texas, produces vehicles equipped with sophisticated onboard technology, including GPS systems and internal data storage systems that can sometimes provide critical evidence in criminal investigations.

While authorities have not publicly detailed what digital or forensic evidence may have been gathered from the vehicle, modern electric cars often record data that can help trace location history or usage timelines, depending on the circumstances.

Investigators have not released information about when or how the Tesla came to be abandoned in the Hollywood Hills.

Public Spotlight on a Rising Music Star

D4vd, born in Houston, Texas, rose rapidly within the music industry thanks to viral success on TikTok and streaming platforms. In 2022, his song “Romantic Homicide” gained widespread attention and climbed to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart.

Blending elements of indie rock, R&B, and lo-fi pop, the young artist cultivated a passionate Gen Z fanbase. His early success led to a recording contract with Interscope Records through Darkroom Records, and he released projects titled Petals to Thorns and The Lost Petals in 2023.

At the time Hernandez’s body was discovered, Burke was on a U.S. tour. He continued performing for a period after news of the investigation surfaced. However, as reports increasingly linked him to the case, he canceled remaining tour dates and scrapped a planned European run.

The entertainment industry has remained relatively quiet following news of his arrest, likely awaiting formal charges and further developments.

Grand Jury Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Grand jury proceedings are typically confidential. In this case, subpoenas issued in January sought testimony from close relatives of Burke. Those family members reportedly appealed the subpoenas in Texas, resulting in the once-sealed documents becoming public.

Grand juries are convened to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to formally charge a suspect with a crime. Unlike trial juries, they do not decide guilt or innocence but rather evaluate whether probable cause exists.

The decision now rests with prosecutors in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether to formally file charges. If charges are filed, Burke would face arraignment in Los Angeles Superior Court, where he would enter a plea.

Under California law, first-degree murder can carry penalties including 25 years to life in prison, life without parole, or in certain aggravated circumstances, even capital punishment. However, California currently has a moratorium on executions.

Community Impact and Public Safety Questions

The case has left families across California asking hard questions.

  • How was a teen missing for more than a year?
  • Could earlier intervention have changed the outcome?
  • What warning signs, if any, were missed?

Missing juvenile cases often present complex investigative challenges, especially when victims travel across jurisdictions or maintain online connections that extend beyond their immediate communities.

Law enforcement agencies across California continue to work through extensive caseloads involving missing minors. According to federal data from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, thousands of missing children reports are filed nationwide each year, with varying circumstances ranging from runaways to abductions and homicides.

This case underscores the urgent need for vigilance, parental awareness, and sustained investigative resources.

The Presumption of Innocence

While the allegations are grave and the details disturbing, it is critical to remember that an arrest is not a conviction. Under the U.S. legal system, every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Burke’s legal team, should he retain counsel, will have the opportunity to challenge evidence, question investigative procedures, and present a defense.

At the same time, the victim’s family deserves a thorough, transparent legal process that seeks the truth and ensures accountability.

The Broader Cultural Conversation

The case has also sparked discussion about celebrity culture and the rapid rise of social media fame. In today’s digital age, artists can achieve international recognition in a matter of months, often without the traditional vetting or long-term developmental structures once associated with the entertainment industry.

This tragedy reminds us that fame and talent do not place anyone above the law. America’s justice system is built on the principle that all individuals—regardless of wealth, status, or notoriety—are accountable for their actions.

As patriotic Americans, we believe in equal application of the law, rigorous due process, and unwavering protection of our communities—especially our children.

What Comes Next

The next critical step will be the District Attorney’s decision on formal charges. If murder charges are filed, the judicial process will move into preliminary hearings, potential motions, and eventually a trial unless a plea agreement is reached.

Investigators may also continue pursuing additional forensic testing, digital evidence analysis, and witness interviews as the case progresses.

For now, Burke remains in custody without bail, and detectives have stated that their work is ongoing.

A Community Seeking Justice

The killing of Celeste Rivas Hernandez is a sobering reminder that evil acts can touch any neighborhood, any community, and any family.

From Lake Elsinore to Los Angeles, Californians are waiting for answers. Parents are holding their children a little tighter. Communities are demanding transparency and justice.

In America, justice may sometimes move slowly—but it must move surely. Every victim deserves a voice. Every family deserves truth. And every suspect deserves a fair but firm application of the law.

Wake Up America News will continue to follow this case closely, providing updates as prosecutors review evidence and the legal process unfolds. The nation will be watching to ensure that justice is served and that communities remain protected from those who seek to harm the innocent.
