Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is now admitting there have been “real failures” in America’s immigration system following the tragic killing of 21-year-old Loyola University Chicago student Sheridan Gorman — but many Americans are asking why those failures were allowed to continue in the first place.
Gorman was fatally shot in the early morning hours Thursday while standing with friends at a pier in Chicago. Police have charged 25-year-old Jose Medina-Medina, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, in connection with her death. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Medina-Medina was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol on May 9, 2023 — and then released into the United States during the Biden administration.
Instead of taking responsibility for Illinois’ sanctuary policies, Pritzker appeared to deflect blame toward Washington.
“There have been real failures,” Pritzker said. “Those failures extend beyond the borders of Illinois… a failure to have comprehensive immigration reform, a failure of the president to go after the worst of the worst.”
Illinois is a sanctuary state, meaning local law enforcement agencies are largely barred from cooperating with federal immigration authorities. Critics argue that such policies create dangerous blind spots — and that American citizens ultimately pay the price.
Community in Mourning
As political leaders traded talking points, Sheridan Gorman’s hometown of Yorktown Heights, New York, came together in a powerful show of unity. On Tuesday night, homes across the community glowed green in her honor — a tribute reflecting one of the local school’s colors and a symbol of love for a life taken too soon.
State Assemblyman Matt Slater described the display as a gesture to remind the Gorman family they are not alone.
“We’re all here for them… our hearts are broken,” he said.
Outside their home, Sheridan’s mother, Jessica Gorman, made it clear the family’s focus remains on honoring their daughter.
“We are gonna get justice for Sheridan,” she said. “We are really focusing this week specifically on burying our daughter… We are not addressing this man.”
In an earlier statement, the family expressed deep frustration with the policies that allowed Medina-Medina to remain in the country after being encountered at the border.
“When systems fail — whether through release decisions, lack of coordination, or unwillingness to act — the consequences are not abstract. They are real. And in our case, they are permanent.”
Trail of Evidence
According to an arrest report, Medina-Medina was captured on security footage inside his apartment building shortly after the shooting, notably without a mask. Earlier, police say he was seen wearing black clothing and a black mask as he walked away from the scene, displaying what officers described as a distinct limp and slow gait.
Investigators tracked the suspect’s movements from the pier to nearby streets and ultimately to the rear entrance of his apartment complex in Rogers Park. A building engineer reportedly recognized the suspect due to his distinctive walk.
Images were entered into a law enforcement database, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection identified Medina-Medina. He was arrested at his residence soon after.
Records indicate that in 2023, Medina-Medina had been staying at a city-sponsored migrant shelter located at the Leone Beach Park fieldhouse in Rogers Park. That facility later closed in 2024.
A National Reckoning
Pritzker acknowledged that immigration enforcement is ultimately a federal responsibility, while also stating that state and local authorities must prosecute violent criminals. Yet Illinois’ sanctuary status has fueled an ongoing debate about whether state policies hinder cooperation with federal officials.
